Are amusement park rides safe? Comptroller’s office says inspections lack oversight
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- As the warm weather becomes permanent, carnivals and festivals will begin to pop-up and bring games, food, and rides to the five boroughs.
Many people purchase tickets and get on rides without thinking twice, assuming that they’re safe.
Who is responsible for ensuring that the pop-up rides have met safety standards?
Amusement park rides are subject to initial inspection and spot checks by the Department of Building’s (DOB) Elevator Unit to ensure safety protocols are being followed.
Despite an increasing number of annual spot checks and a declining number of accidents on amusement park rides throughout the city, New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer’s Office released an audit stating the agency suffers from “deficient oversight.”
