This is for sure an unusual load condition that giant wheel designers have to take into account, especially when the results of this are so spectacular and frightening at the same time.

Every ride designer would certainly shudder when seeing these images and videos of the uncontrolled effect of Tyhoon Lan on a Ferris Wheel in Japan some days ago, where the extreme strong winds made the gondola of this Ferris Wheel start to overturn out of control, creating a dangerous situation, even if the ride was of course closed.

 

Designers of Giant Wheel surely will take in consideration this when designing the structure of their gondolas and calculating their weight.
